It's interesting to me how many of the longer words in English derive from Latin words- most of them that come to mind are three syllables or more, while German seems to give us the shorter words. Here are some interesting examples from the Latin end of the pool:
Manus, -us: (feminine). Hand
English Derivative: Manually (by hand)
Bellum,-i: (neuter) War, warfare.
You've, no doubt, heard of a "casus belli".
English Derivative: Belligerent, bellicose.
