Much of Lin Tianmiao's work deals with the strands of daily life that connect us to one another. Since 1998, she has undertaken the Braiding installation, a series of eerie photographs of herself, printed on transparent screens and stitched across the surface by threads that trail out behind the screen. Lin's father was a traditional Chinese painter and her mother was an expert dancer. She is one of a handful of contemporary female artists in China and part of the growth in photography since the ban on non-Communist photography has loosened in the last 25 years. As pictured, Lin is also an accomplished sculptor with a farmhouse studio in the Songzhuang Artist Village in Beijing.
