Bowing to a senior scholar, I note that this article on academic freedom, by Timothy Burke, is much better than anything I've written on the topic. His section on how the tenure process encourages concensus thinking, often in ways that are completely apolitical, is as illuminating as a flash of lightning in a dark night.
